Which way round, and what split?

A 50/50 split suits people who batch-cook and freeze; 70/30 gives you a big fridge and a smaller freezer, which suits fresh shoppers. Fridge-on-top models put the fridge at eye level, which is the one you open most — worth thinking about if bending is a problem.

Frost free saves you a job

Frost free means no defrosting and no losing drawer space to ice. Static models are slightly cheaper to run and slightly cheaper to buy, but you will be defrosting once or twice a year.

Let it settle before you switch it on

If the appliance has travelled upright it needs a couple of hours before being switched on; if it has been laid down at any point, leave it standing overnight. This lets the refrigerant settle back and it is the most common cause of a new fridge not cooling properly.
