Buying a dishwasher in Southampton

Full size, slimline or integrated?

• Full size (60cm) — around 12–14 place settings, the standard choice for a family.
• Slimline (45cm) — about 9–10 settings, for narrow kitchens where 60cm will not fit.
• Integrated — hidden behind a cupboard door, matched to your kitchen.

What a place setting means

One place setting is a dinner plate, side plate, bowl, glass, cup, saucer and cutlery. A 13-setting machine is not the same as thirteen people — it is a measure of volume, and awkward items like roasting tins and tall glasses eat into it faster than the number suggests.

Running costs and cycles

Modern dishwashers use far less water than washing up by hand, and the eco cycle is the cheapest to run despite taking longer — it heats the water more slowly rather than working the machine harder. Keep the filter clean and the salt topped up in our hard-water area and it will last a lot longer.

Repair or replace?
