Buying a freestanding cooker in Southampton

Freestanding cookers slot into a gap between units — the simplest appliance to replace, with no kitchen alterations needed.

50cm or 60cm?

Measure the gap before anything else. 60cm is the standard modern width and gives you a usable oven and four burners or zones. 50cm suits older kitchens and smaller spaces. Leave a few millimetres either side so it slides in without scraping the units.

Single or double oven

A double oven — a main cavity plus a smaller top oven or grill — is genuinely useful if you cook a main and sides at different temperatures, or host at Christmas. If you mostly cook one thing at a time, the extra height is better spent on a bigger single cavity.

Cleaning

Catalytic liners absorb grease as you cook and need occasional high-heat runs. Pyrolytic heats the cavity until residue turns to ash you wipe away — the least work by a distance, and worth the premium if you roast regularly.

Repair or replace?
