Why a chest holds more than it looks

Cold air sinks, so opening the lid loses much less cold than opening an upright door. That makes chest freezers cheaper to run and better at holding temperature during a power cut — and there are no drawers or shelves taking up space, so the usable volume is close to the stated capacity.

Putting one in a garage

Check the climate class before siting a freezer somewhere unheated. Many appliances are rated for a minimum ambient of around 10°C, and below that the thermostat can stop calling for cooling — the freezer thinks it is already cold enough while the contents slowly thaw. Keeping it organised

Baskets are worth having. Without them a chest freezer becomes an archaeological dig, and the longer the lid is open the more it costs you.
