Buying a hob in Southampton

Induction, ceramic and gas hobs, sized to drop into a standard worktop cut-out. The type you choose changes how you cook more than any other appliance in the kitchen.

Induction, ceramic or gas

• Induction — heats the pan directly, so it is the fastest and the cheapest to run, and the glass around the pan stays cool. Pans must be magnetic; if a fridge magnet sticks to the base, it works.
• Ceramic — a heated element under glass. Works with any pan and wipes clean, but slower to respond.
• Gas — instant, visible control and works with every pan, at the cost of more cleaning around the burners.

Check the cut-out before you order

Hobs are sold by overall width but fitted to a cut-out size, and the two are not the same. Measure the aperture in the worktop, not the old hob, and check the depth of the unit below for the connection box.

Repair or replace?
