Buying a washer dryer in Southampton

One machine that washes and dries, for kitchens where there is only room for one. Worth knowing the trade-offs before you buy — they suit some households very well and frustrate others.

The one thing to know about capacity

The wash load and the dry load are not the same. A machine advertised as 8kg wash will typically dry around 5kg, so a full wash has to be split into two drying cycles. If you regularly wash full loads and dry all of them, a separate washing machine and dryer will be less hassle.

When a washer dryer is the right call

They make sense in flats, small kitchens and utility spaces with a single plumbed slot — anywhere a second machine simply will not fit. They are also good where drying is occasional rather than routine: airing bedding, getting school uniform dry overnight, drying through a wet week.

Running costs

Drying is the expensive half of the cycle whatever machine does it. If you dry most days, look at a heat pump tumble dryer instead and keep the washing machine separate — the running-cost difference adds up over a year.
