Buying a tumble dryer in Southampton

Condenser, vented and heat pump dryers in stock. The type you choose makes more difference to your electricity bill than any other decision here, so it is worth two minutes of thought.

Vented, condenser or heat pump?

• Vented — cheapest to buy, but needs a hose to an outside wall or open window. Best where you have an obvious spot for it.
• Condenser — collects the moisture in a tank you empty, so it can go anywhere. The usual choice.
• Heat pump — a condenser that recycles its own heat. Roughly half the running cost, gentler on clothes, and takes longer per load. It pays back if you dry several loads a week.

Match the dryer to your washing machine

As a rule the dryer should hold about the same load as the machine that fills it, or you will end up splitting every wash into two dries. If your washing machine is 8kg, an 8kg dryer keeps things simple.

Where it will live

Dryers need air around them, so a sealed cupboard is a poor choice. If it is going in a garage, check the minimum operating temperature — a dryer in an unheated garage through a cold snap can struggle, and heat pump models are more sensitive than condensers.

Repair or replace?
