Freestanding cooker or separate oven and hob?

A freestanding cooker slots into a gap between units and is the simplest swap — no kitchen work, and it comes out again just as easily. A built-in oven with a separate hob gives you a tidier kitchen and lets you put the oven at eye level, but it needs the right housing unit and worktop cut-out, so measure before you commit.

Which hob type suits how you cook?

• Induction — fastest to heat, cheapest to run, and the surface stays cool around the pan. Needs magnetic pans.
• Ceramic — flat and easy to wipe down, works with any pan, slower to respond than induction.
• Gas — instant visible heat and works with anything, but more to keep clean.

Ovens: single, double, and cleaning

A single oven is fine for most households. A double oven earns its space if you regularly cook a main and a side at different temperatures, or at Christmas. On cleaning, catalytic liners absorb splashes as you cook, while pyrolytic heats to a high temperature and turns residue to ash you wipe out — the easiest option, and worth it if you roast often.
